Acne affects about 90% of adolescents and can also occur in adulthood, usually affecting people aged 20 to 40 years.<\/p>\n
Acne develops because your sebaceous glands are overactive. These glands normally produce small amounts of sebum, which is a thick mixture of oil and skin cells. When you have acne, these glands go into overproduction and the extra sebum can block your follicles and bacteria can move in.<\/p>\n
Blackheads (black spots the size of a pinhead) are open right on the surface of your skin (superficial) and don’t leave scars
\nWhiteheads or pustules, the most common type of acne, are usually the first lesions people get – they don’t turn black because they’re not exposed to the air
\nDeep pustules and cysts look irritated, they’re usually red and swollen with visible pus
\nDeep acne can be more severe \u2013 it’s usually red, inflamed, filled with pus, and painful to the touch<\/p>\n

Grade I acne is the mildest form of acne. There may be minor pimples but they will be small and appear only very occasionally, and in small numbers (one or two). Blackheads and milia will be found, sometimes in great numbers, but there is no inflammation in Grade I acne.<\/p>\n
Grade II is considered moderate acne. There will be blackheads and milia, generally in greater numbers. You will start seeing more papules and the formation of pustules in this stage. They will appear with greater frequency, and general breakout activity will be more obvious. Slight inflammation of the skin is now apparent.<\/p>\n
This type of acne is considered severe. The main difference between Grade II acne and Grade III is the amount of inflammation present. The skin is now obviously reddened and inflamed. Papules and pustules have developed in greater numbers, and nodules will be present.<\/p>\n
