What is cellulite?
Characterized by an orange peel skin aspect visible to the naked eye, cellulite is not a disease, but an aesthetic disgrace. It appears most often on the buttocks or the thighs, but also sometimes on the arms or the belly. Cellulite is a woman’s pet peeve. As it resists to diets, it concerns thin women as well as curvy ones. It consists of a superficial layer of fat located under the skin. To the fat cell’s increase in volume (adipocytes) are added water retention (bad blood and lymphatic circulation) and fibrosis (modification of the collagen fibres). Thus, according to the predominant phenomenon, three types of cellulite are distinguished: adipose (the excessive storage of fat is dominant), fibrous (a collagen dysfunction is dominant), with water retention (a bad circulation is dominant).
What are the causes of cellulite?
There are several: bad blood and lymphatic circulation, lack of physical exercise, bad diet, stress, depression, but mostly genetic predisposition and hormonal imbalance, the main cause of which often is the ovaries. The oestrogens that they produce stimulate femoral lipoprotein-lipase, an enzyme responsible for fat storage. Furthermore, these hormones promote salt and water retention inside tissues. This is why cellulite evolves alongside hormonal variations. Cellulite is developed when ovaries secrete an excessive quantity of oestrogens and more particularly at certain periods of one’s life: adolescence, pregnancy, premenstrual syndrome, use of a contraceptive pill that is badly adapted, pre-menopause and menopause.
